The purpose of this position is to operate various refuse trucks for the collection of curbside, residential trash, recyclables and yard waste. Employees in this classification perform skilled work in the operation of heavy, motorized equipment, and operating a dump truck, brush truck, refuse truck, roll-off truck, and/or an automated or rear-load collection vehicle; position is responsible for loading refuse or other maintenance materials into appropriate truck; hauling materials to appropriate processing facility, preparing and maintaining records of work status; and performing general maintenance on equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Driving vehicles for the collection of town refuse, recycling and yard waste; loading refuse and other materials into appropriate trucks; traveling to landfills for disposal; issuing violation notices; collecting roadside trash; collecting special pickups as needed.
Conducting daily maintenance and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment; may perform minor repairs as needed.
Assisting with town special events and weather emergency situations.
Follow all town and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety requirements.
May assist in training new or temporary personnel in this position
Performing other duties as required.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED supplemented by one to two years’ experience and/or training involving heavy equipment operation required; or a combination of education, training and experience
- Solid waste collection experience strongly preferred.
- Must be able to obtain both flagger certification and forklift operator license issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation within six months of employment with the town.
- Ability to work overtime as required
- Must report to work in, and wear at all times on the job, safety shoes of an acceptable standard, effective the first scheduled day of work. May not work without safety shoes.
- Must carry a town-issued cell phone, if required
- Valid Class B Commercial driver’s license with air brakes, with acceptable record or the ability to obtain within nine months of employment

Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town. No remote work is available.
