What you will do
Work in a dynamic, hands-on environment supporting a Robotics Engineer in the design and development of innovative technologies, processes and fixturing that add value to production. Assist in the design and construction of the current 20 line-follow AGV project and new autonomous AGV prototype. Apply Mechanical engineering principles and CAD to design mechanical fixtures of production, thermoforming molds/products and other mechanical/electrical items related to Kaizen activities. Set up and run 3D printers, CNC equipment, power tools and hand tools to fabricate prototypes. Utilizes the PDCA scientific approach to solve problems. When needed, assists in the solving of production issues to improve ergonomics and improve process efficiency. Carry out any other necessary tasks delegated by the supervising engineer for the wellbeing of the plant.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop mechanical parts, assemblies, and drawings in CAD to serve as blueprints and plans for prototype products and equipment.
- Assists in all aspects of the development of prototype equipment, fixtures or products from initial conception to implementation.
- Writes computers programs and assists in software design (PLC and text-based coding).
- Maintains records and accurate details of all completed engineering work.
- Analyze prototype systems or product for performance (pre-implementation) and uses PDCA approach to solve issues.
- Actively provide suggestions for ways to improve products and equipment.
- Presents completed products and projects at staff meetings or exhibitions.
- Keeps apprised of the latest developments and innovations in the industry.
- Conducts evaluations of products and equipment developed by the Industrial Development group for effectiveness after they are placed in service.
- Orders and replaces equipment parts.
- Assists in Kaizen activities and answers employee or customer questions about the function and maintenance of Kaizen products after implementation.
- Provides technical support to employees and team members.
- Ensures that all safety procedures are observed during laboratory or production floor work.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Background knowledge in engineering mechanical design through CAD (preference for PTC Creo Parametric), robotics, and computer science.
- Strong experience with DFM (Design for Manufacturability).
- Exposure to machine learning and has experience with Python.
- Familiar with robotics and automation.
- In depth knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
- Exhibits strong organizational skills and writing skills.
- Communicates clearly and effectively with shop floor personnel, technicians and other engineers.
- Demonstrates patience when running multiple tasks at the same time.
Education and Experience:
- In the second or third year of a bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with at least one year of relevant work experience, either as an intern, full-time employee, or as a part of a course curriculum.
- Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75
Work Environment
An intern as a Robotics or Mechanical engineer spends most of their working hours in a laboratory setting, designing testing and building equipment and products. They will spend time on the shop floor interacting with associates, technicians, engineers and managers. Some time is spent in an office setting for meetings, processing paperwork and maintaining accurate records. A standard 40-hour work week is expected. The position is 100% hands on in a fast-paced environment that will yield high satisfaction. You will be pushed, challenged and allowed to own your results.
This position is not remote, and the expectation is to be in person at the Salem, Virginia plant location.
